How Apple Lost Its Place in The Classroom

The company had been in classrooms for years, as far back as the Apple IIe, which Apple donated to schools by the thousands in the early 1980s. Apple wanted to bring its devices into every school in America, to usher in an era of computer literacy and education. And perhaps, to introduce Apple-branded devices to kids early enough to make them lifelong customers.

Today’s classrooms are powered by Chromebooks and, to a lesser extent, Windows laptops. These are sturdy, versatile, and inexpensive machines that have revolutionized how schools incorporate technology into their classrooms. Steve Jobs wanted to put a computer in the hands of every student. But Chromebooks—not Macbooks—have made that vision a reality.

Instructure Launches “Partner Booster Program” to Support Edtech Startups

On March 30, Instructure, the Utah-based company best known for its learning management system Canvas and workplace software program Bridge, announced that it is starting its own incubator program for edtech startups. The program, which arrives on the heels of the company’s tenth anniversary, promises to offer edtech startups access to some of its services and expertise, but the announcement may also suggest that the company is looking for strategic ways to grow.

UC-Berkeley Engages Blackboard Ally to Improve Accessibility

The University of California, Berkeley, has contracted with Blackboard to connect students to online courses through the Blackboard Ally inclusive learning platform, which aims to improve accessibility for all students. Students will begin using Ally this fall.
