Some Ed Tech Perspective on UC’s Billion-Dollar Payroll System Fiasco
In 2011 the University of California laid out plans for a new payroll system called UCPath (for Payroll, Academic Personnel, Timekeeping, and Human Resources). The goal of the $170 million project was to save a reported $100 million per year eventually and to replace a 30-year-old Payroll Personnel System (PPS) that runs separately for each of the 11 UC locations with Oracle’s PeopleSoft payroll and HR systems. All systems were planned to be live by the end of 2014 and run centrally in a new UCPath processing center.

University partially delays $100 million IT upgrade
Part of a $100 million technology upgrade to UT’s mainframe system is delayed indefinitely, announced President Gregory Fenves in an email to staff and faculty Tuesday. He said the postponement resulted from a decision made in January to switch to a phased-launch approach, meaning the new human resources and payroll systems will be rolled out before the financial system upgrade.
A portion of the upgrade will replace UT’s human resources, payroll and finance operations to a cloud-based system called Workday. “Workday is a powerful tool that will serve the UT community more effectively and allow the University to become even more productive stewards of the public dollars once the business process redesign has been completed,” Fenves said in the email.

Potential Blackboard replacement – “Schoology” launches in trial classes
Seven pilot courses launched this semester to test Schoology, a potential replacement learning management system (LMS) for Blackboard. The search for a new LMS began around two and a half years ago after the cost of Blackboard continued to increase while its system became more outdated
Schoology narrowly ranked higher across the board after a larger review process over the summer that factored in pricing, long-term agreements, support services and data risk management. “Unless something isn’t working with the system that we discover, but we have done so much due diligence and testing of the system, I would be very surprised if this happens,” Chipman said. “I’m…99 percent certain that by the fall of ’18, the entire university will be on Schoology. That’s the goal.”

Cal State U Signs Systemwide Partnership with InsideTrack to Support Enrollment and Retention
California State University’s 23 campuses now can access a range of recruitment and retention services to boost student success. The institution has partnered with InsideTrack to provide coaching, consulting, training, analytical and technological services systemwide through a three-year Master Enabling Agreement.
“Many of today’s students are adding education to already busy lives, filled with work, family and other obligations,” said Gary Berg, associate vice president for academic affairs and dean of extended university at California State University Channel Islands, in a statement. “Working with InsideTrack greatly enhances our ability to support these students in making informed enrollment decisions and building the skills they need to succeed in school and in life.”

National Park College Selects Unit4 To Modernize Campus Tech And Improve Student Success With Data-Driven Insights
National Park College (NPC) has selected Unit4 Student Management and Unit4 Business World On! running on the Microsoft Azure Cloud to replace an aging legacy system. In addition to student management, the new partnership between Unit4 and NPC will also include use of Unit4’s keystone ERP system to manage student records, finance, HR and payroll.
