Current Trends in the Higher Ed SIS Market 2010 – 2018
- New Student Information System (SIS) implementations have been plummeting since 2011;
- Small to medium-sized institutions with less than 10,000 students are more likely than larger institutions to install a new product in this market;
- Demands for outcomes-based systems are growing;
Overall, a strong pattern of “holding off until new software hits the scene/has settled down” remains firmly entrenched.

Learning Management System – Oklahoma State University
OSU Moving from Brightspace to Canvas
Oklahoma State University has used D2L as its LMS since 2005. In summer 2015, the University adopted a major update called Brightspace which is what the University currently uses.
“A couple of years ago, I thought it would be a good time to look around and see what else was going on in learning management systems,” said Christine Ormsbee, the associate provost/director for the OSU Institute for Teaching and Learning Excellence.
In Spring 2015, it was decided that the current LMS was not doing what people had hoped it would, so an official review committee formed. The committee voted to move to Canvas, which is intended to be used on campus in the Spring of 2019.

Student Information System – Iowa State University
New Student Registration System To Be Implemented Over Next Three-to-Five Years
Iowa State’s decades-old registration system will soon be replaced.
Online services such as the degree audit and class registration programs are available to students through AccessPlus, but much of this software can’t communicate with other related resources, making it less streamlined for users and also causing strife for academic advisors who would prefer all of the data to be available in one location.
The new software is being developed by Workday. Mark Simpson, Iowa State’s registrar, says they’re planning to roll out pieces of the larger system in a modular fashion as they surpass the individual systems currently in place.
