Student Information System Software by Total Enrollment
When a post-secondary institution wishes to change its Student Information System software, what is the first question they ask? It’s usually either What system is my neighbour using? or What system is used by institutions of my size?
About five years ago when my university (University of Ottawa) started looking for a new Student Information System software to replace our homegrown system, I wish we would have had access to this information, particularly in a graph such as the one below.

The findings — highlighted in EDUCAUSE’s latest annual list of the “Top 10 IT Issues” confronting higher education institutions — also point to evolving concerns around information security, the need for IT leaders to play a larger role in institution-wide strategy and for institutions to move beyond data-driven decisions, according to Susan Grajek, EDUCAUSE vice president for communities and research.
University System of Maryland Partners with HelioCampus to Analyze System-Wide USMx MOOC Data
The ability to explore and mine the data across the USMx platform was a primary driver of this partnership between The University System of Maryland (USM) and HelioCampus. Key questions the System is trying to answer include how to best identify and recruit students from USMx programs who may eventually enroll at a Maryland school and how students are engaging and performing in USMx courses and programs. The initial reports provided by HelioCampus have been related to marketing and enrollment so USM can understand who is potentially coming to the System with certificates in hand.
“HelioCampus is already giving me feedback on things to consider regarding the data, based now on design and student success, so that we can have better passage rates, better engagement, more meaningful dialogue, and real impact in our courses,” said Paul Walsh, Program Director, USMx.

Wellesley College Modernizes with Workday HR and Finance Suite
When Ravi Ravishanker, Chief Information Officer, Library and Technology Services, Wellesley College arrived in 2010, he found an administration system that drew plenty of complaints.
“The Banner system in use at the time was old, difficult to change, we had difficulty getting data but it was too soon to change. There weren’t that many choices and even then, there was no way I could transition to a new ERP in the time between when I arrived and the expiration of the contract with the supplier in 2012. We extended the contract while we searched and in the meantime built some little web applications to hide Banner from users which they loved.”
In making the decision to go with Workday, Ravishanker was placing a significant bet on a single supplier strategy for everything from HR admin through payroll and finance.

“As the nation’s third largest academic anesthesia practice, we have to perform exceptionally today while also evolving our department to anticipate the challenges we expect to face in the future. This means proactively managing our clinical staffing practices ahead of the growing patient care and financial demands we have to meet,” said Charles W. Whitten, M.D., Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Management at UT Southwestern. “Better data and predictive analytics will inform how we measure and manage our staff and will help us build on the high levels of quality and efficiency we already achieve.”

Goodbye D2L, Hello Canvas
Canvas will replace Desire2Learn (D2L) at University of Wisconsin – Whitewater, whose contract ends with the UW System in July of 2018. Canvas will also replace Moodle, which is used by other departments in the UW System.
As of Oct. 13, Canvas, a product of Instructure, was contracted to be the Digital Learning Environment (DLE) for all UW schools. … This is the result of a multi-year plan researching and testing different platforms for a new DLE, instead of a LMS universal in all University of Wisconsin schools.
UW Oshkosh, for its Part, Started Planning the Transition of its Digital Learning Environment from Desire to Learn to Canvas for Fall 2019.
“The entire UW System had to collectively decide which product to move to when the D2L contract expires,” Milkovich said. “A committee of people with representatives from all campuses conducted a competitive procurement process to determine the best system and selected Canvas out of the offerings that were submitted.” Milkovich said re-signing with D2L was an option; the site had developed a new cloud-based platform which would have required a multi-year migration process as well. “Since migration was inevitable, the committee chose the product they felt offered the best functionality to serve our students,” Milkovich said.
Ohio University to Use a New Communication Platform to Help Students
Ohio University is in the process of implementing a new program available to students and faculty that would help students strive toward graduation.
MyOHIO Success Network, a program powered from Starfish Retention Solutions by Hobsons, is a retention management platform. That means it provides the technology for OU to develop an information and communication “hub” to help our students, Loralyn Taylor, director of analytics for University Student Success Initiatives, said. … “The idea is to identify when a student might be becoming at risk of academic difficulties so that you can identify that student and get them to the right support service,” she said.
