Student First: Born from Scratch to Deliver the Future‑Ready SIS

Company Profile

Key Takeaways:

  • Clean-Slate Design: Built without legacy constraints to streamline essential SIS workflows.
  • Adaptive Architecture: Engineered to support shifting enrollment models and flexible learning pathways.
  • Practical Focus: Targets real institutional needs with configurable tools and transparent pricing.

Founded in 2021 by EdTech veteran David Meek, Student First is a brand-new Student Information System built entirely from the ground up. Unlike legacy SIS providers, it was conceived with modern technology and a clear purpose: to empower non‑traditional institutions through a truly future‑ready platform.

Origins and Purpose

David Meek, who previously founded Campus Management Corporation (now part of Anthology) and Education Technology Associates, recognized a foundational gap in the SIS marketplace: established competitors charging for aging systems layered with outdated code. When he spoke to HigherEd leaders—especially from smaller colleges and career education institutions—he heard frustration with complex legacy platforms that drove up costs and slowed innovation. Determined to build a clean‑slate solution, he brought together a team of experienced SIS veterans—including Joe Fisher, VP of Solutions—and launched Student First to create software without technical debt, rapid implementation timelines, transparent pricing, and a focus on real institutional needs.

Designed specifically for career colleges, online programs, accelerated cohorts, and adult learners, Student First prioritizes workflows, compliance, multilingual and multi-currency support, and analytics that reflect actual student engagement patterns. It’s deeply student‑centric—hence the name.

Product Evolution: Built for Speed, Built for Change

From day one, Student First embraced modern SaaS and a mobile-first design. Its initial module set covered the full student lifecycle: recruiting and admissions, academic operations, financial aid distribution, billing, career services, advising, and student portals—all within a low-code/no-code framework that allows institutions to onboard in as little as four months.

Evergreen upgrades mean feature enhancements roll out continuously at no extra cost, while integrations like Power BI analytics and flexible workflows simplify reporting and institutional insights. The architecture is built to remain adaptable—whether clients expand globally, launch new cohorts, or introduce competency-based/digital learning models.

Founding Team & Culture

The Student First team maintains a lean profile (11–50 employees) but benefits from deep domain experience. Founders like David Meek and Joe Fisher bring decades of SIS implementation and strategy to the table. Built around listening and partnership, the culture emphasizes creating the simplest experience possible without oversimplifying the institution’s needs.

Focus and Market Positioning

Targeting institutions often overlooked by traditional SIS vendors, Student First aims to serve those focused on vocational, continuing, or online education, and international campuses. The platform’s multilingual/multi-currency capabilities, combined with fair pricing and configurable workflows, help institutions escape legacy vendor lock-in and adopt modern systems that match their operational complexity.

Target Audience & Early Traction

The company has quickly gained traction among small to mid-sized institutions, the same segment that historically fueled the growth of Campus Management. In just a few years, the company has secured roughly 30 clients, with about one third currently implemented. The momentum suggests a growing market appetite for SIS solutions purpose-built for agility rather than inherited complexity.

The Future of Student First

Student First enters the SIS landscape without legacy constraints, offering a lightweight platform built around speed, simpler workflows, and lower operational overhead. Its architecture is shaped to accommodate emerging needs such as shifting enrollment models, modular credentials, and more flexible student pathways.

Looking ahead, the platform’s development seems focused on expanding real-time data access and refining student-centred processes rather than replicating the breadth of traditional SIS ecosystems. Its trajectory suggests a product evolving to meet contemporary institutional pressures while maintaining a narrower, efficiency-driven scope.

The AI Ecosystem Advantage in Higher Education

One of the more interesting themes emerging in AI discussions is the idea that the real transformation is not about adding AI to existing workflows. It is about redesigning how organizations operate from the ground up. In a recent article, Julie Linn Teigland argues that organizations often treat AI as a “bolt-on” tool for incremental ...
