RFPs Trends and Updates – December 2023

Higher Ed Institution Data K-12 Market Data

The ListEdTech team has been tracking RFP data for just over three years now (you can read previous posts on our website). During this time, we learned how much value RFPs bring to institutions looking to replace one of their edtech solutions. In addition to giving insights on upcoming popular product categories, past RFPs can provide an important starting point for institutions. Soon, we will launch an RFP search engine for our paid institution subscribers.

Which Product Categories Received the Most RFPs?

As you can see in the following graphs, RFPs inform us, to a certain extent, what will happen in the IT world.

Higher Education

In the HigherEd market, we noticed an increase of RFPs in Alert notifications, CRM software, Textbooks, Digital Course Materials & Courseware, Tutoring, and Work Placement Systems. This influx in these categories is aligned with many institutions’ visions, which want to have more secure campuses, offer better support to students, and ensure a smooth transition into the workforce.

Once popular when we were all confined to our dwellings, Conferencing solutions are now in decline after two strong years in 2020 and 2021. The following product groups received a high number of RFPs, but remain stable: Conduct Manager, Curriculum Management, Learning Management Systems, Proctor Systems, and Room Scheduling.

School Districts (K-12)

Similar to HigherEd, Alert Notifications in K-12 seem to be on the rise. K-12 RFPs are also increasing for Content Management Systems and Student Information Systems. ERP systems and LMS, although not rising, are constantly among the top product categories with a higher number of RFPs each year.

RFPs Available in the Institution Portal as of January

We believe that our new portal feature, the RFP search engine, will allow our institution users to find useful information to prepare their next RFP while better understanding the IT market. The RFP search engine will be available to all paid institution subscribers and will allow them to search by product category, year, and even other institutional characteristics. They will have access to 2,000+ RFPs.

Interested in learning more about the advantages of subscribing to the portal, visit the Portal Access for Institutions page or the Portal Access for Industry one.

Who Are HigherEd’s Tech Leaders?

This year, I’ve been revisiting some of the classic business books: Blue Ocean Shift, Free, The Innovator’s Dilemma, Zero to One, and of course, Crossing the Chasm. That last one really got me thinking about early adopters. In tech markets, they’re the people (or in HigherEd, the institutions) who are comfortable taking risks, trying something new, and shaping the market ... Who Are HigherEd’s Tech Leaders?  Read More

Anthology’s Chapter 11 Filing: Breaking Up to Refocus

September 2025 marked a major turning point for Anthology, the owner of Blackboard and several other higher education technology platforms. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. after efforts to sell itself or parts of its business outside of court failed. The filing is not a liquidation. Instead, it is a structured reorganization designed to ... Anthology’s Chapter 11 Filing: Breaking Up to Refocus  Read More

Rethinking Market Saturation in EdTech

Market saturation is a concept we often discuss at ListEdTech because it comes up frequently with our clients. Investors want to know if a market still has room to grow, while startups want to understand whether they are entering a space with opportunities or one that is already crowded. Last year, we explored saturation by ... Rethinking Market Saturation in EdTech  Read More
